Demystifying Flibanserin

Flibanserin. Ever since the introduction of Sildenafil nitrate(male viagra), there has been a quest for the search of a female analog. Many global pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer, the inventor of male viagra have embarked on this journey and failed. The trouble with a female analog of Viagra is that unlike in men, in women, it takes much more than just increased blood flow to the genitals to achieve sexual stimulation. Flibanserin is the closest female analog of viagra ever made. However, its mechanism of action is totally different from that of male viagra because it targets the brain and not the genitals. What is Flibanserin? Flibanserin is the name of the main active ingredient found in Addyi. Addyi is the non-hormonal and only FDA Approved drug responsible for treating low sexual desire in women. A Brief History Flibanserin, popularly known as the “female viagra” has a long and controversial history. The beleaguered drug was finally approved by the FDA on the 18th of August 2015 after two consecutive fails. It is the first drug to be ever approved by the FDA to treat sexual dysfunction. The first time Flibanserin was presented to the FDA, was in 2010. After a thorough evaluation, the FDA deemed the drug unsafe and it also had marginal effectiveness. After this rejection, some considerable improvements were made to the drug and 3 years later it appeared again before the FDA board for approval. Again, the Food and Drug Administration rejected Flibanserin for the same reasons, it’s effectiveness did not match the side effects associated with the drug. This did not go well with a lot of feminists. Women saw this as injustice on their part–why were men spoilt with a lot of drugs to treat sexual dysfunction when they didn’t have any options at all. One of the most popular organizations formed by women for this purpose was Even the Score. Analysts say that it is due to these campaigns that the FDA was forced to approve Addyi in 2015. And the evidence bears that out a bit. Soon after the approval of Flibanserin by the FDA, its manufacturer Sprout Pharmaceuticals was acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals for $1 billion dollars. Despite this hype transaction, supposedly proving that the drug was some wonder drug—it turned out to perform dismally in sales. It’s still not that clear whether this was due to its ineffectiveness or just bad marketing. What is Flibanserin is used for? Flibanserin is mainly prescribed to premenopausal women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. HSSD is a type of sexual dysfunction mainly experienced by women. It is characterized by lack or even total absence of desire. It is important to note that Flibanserin should not be used to treat a normal low sexual desire resulting from mental or mood disorders, relationship problems or the effects of other medications. This also applies to women who are in menopause, Flibanserin should not be used in menopausal women since it’s quite natural for them to lose sexual interest after menopause. What is it not for?
